Refresh my Soul

Refresh my Soul

How do you unwind when you’re feeling exhausted? Where do you go to for refreshment when you’ve had a long week?

For me, on a Friday night I usually get home from MBC Youth around 11-11:30pm and I am exhausted after a tiring week. With all my girls hopefully asleep in bed by this point, I then proceed to grab a cold ‘No Sugar, No Caffeine Coke’ (I know, at this stage what’s even the point right?!) and then I sit down to watch the a replay of whatever AFL games have been on earlier in the night. In this practice, I’ve found a way to unwind and find some refreshment both physically and mentally.

However, while this practice is helpful, and is good to a big extent, the refreshment that I find is ultimately temporary. Once the alarm goes off at 7am the next morning, and I spend the day watching our two young girls while Amanda goes to play volleyball, then come to the end of the day I often find myself exhausted and in some need of refreshment yet again!

As it turns out, I’ve come to realise that this isn’t just the case for me. Refreshment is a reality for everyone that reminds us all we are finite and fragile. So the question will never be, ‘do we need to be refreshed?, but where are we going to find it?’ You and I have souls that have been built to crave eternity, but we have answers for refreshment that are by their nature temporary. When the meal is over, the trip ends, time with friends/family has closed, the activities we’ve turned to have run their course, when my (not actually sure what’s left in it) Coke is finished and the AFL game ends, what are we going to drink from that will provide the deep soul level refreshment we all crave and need?

We need to be fuelled and fed by a source that isn’t temporary but rather can truly sustain and satisfy. In Jesus Christ we are blessed to have just that. John 7:37-38 “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

Other things might refresh us temporarily, but in Jesus Christ, we have an invitation to look to an eternal God who provides for His people in all our places of wilderness an unending source eternal living water to sustain us and that can provide true renewal to continue on this journey.

Where will you choose to drink from throughout this week?

Blessings, Paul
